Billy Crudup's London Life: Curry, Camden, and High Noon
Billy Crudup, the acclaimed Hollywood actor known for his roles in Almost Famous, The Morning Show, and Jay Kelly, has recently decamped to London for his latest theatrical venture, High Noon. In an exclusive interview with the Evening Standard, Crudup opens up about his love for the city, sharing his favorite spots, meals, and even a hidden graffiti bench in Hyde Park.
A Love for London
Crudup, who has a shelf full of The Simpsons memorabilia alongside his collection of Emmy, Tony, and Critics’ Choice awards, expresses his deep affection for London. Having visited the city for over 30 years to see plays and work on various projects, he feels right at home. “I love London,” he says. “I’ve been coming here for 30 or 35 years or so to see plays, and I’ve worked here many times before. As a New Yorker, I feel very at home here.”
First Impressions and Early Days
When asked about his first flat in London, Crudup recalls his time working on the film Charlotte Gray. “This flat on the way to Heathrow Airport. It’s just before you get on the highway towards London,” he reminisces. He also mentions his comfort in more seedy areas, noting that during a play he did in London a few years ago, staying in Camden felt as comfortable as anywhere else.
London's Charm: A Walking City
Crudup recommends London as a fantastic walking city, perfect for first dates. “You’d have to assess your date properly, but I would suggest a walk through Kensington Gardens or Hyde Park or along the canals by Camden Lock,” he advises. He appreciates London’s rich history and architecture, often stopping by plaques and townhouses that hold stories of the past. “In London, I’m constantly stopping by some plaque or another about who has lived in this townhouse,” he notes.
Shopping Spots and Favorite Meals
When it comes to shopping, Crudup recalls a Marks & Spencer around the corner from his Kensington flat where he bought shirts he’s worn for over 15 years. His culinary adventures in London include a memorable chicken tikka masala. “It was a special kind of chicken masala that I’d never had before that is still a memorable meal for me today,” he says, though he wishes he could remember the name of the restaurant.
Secret Spots and extravagances
Crudup shares a secret about his time in London—a bench in Hyde Park with his initials carved into it. “I don’t know the statute of limitations for graffiti here, but there’s a bench—a different bench—in Hyde Park with my initials on it,” he reveals.
When it comes to extravagances, golf takes the top spot. “A trip with a couple of knucklehead friends down to Florida? That’ll run you a couple of grand too,” he jokes. However, he also acknowledges the importance of his son’s education, which is equally extravagant.
Favorite London Experiences
Among his favorite experiences in London is a visit to The Bath House by Banya London. “I recently went to The Bath House by Banya London, where you can do a hot sauna followed by a cold plunge, and then you sit and they bring you pierogi to eat. I highly recommend it,” he says.
Work and Personal Heroes
Currently, Crudup is busy with the production of High Noon in the West End, alongside Denise Gough. Professionally, he looks up to Meryl Streep, while personally, his 22-year-old son is his hero. “But don’t tell him, because he’s a 22-year-old and they’ve got attitude,” he adds with a chuckle.
What Makes a Londoner?
When asked what makes someone a Londoner, Crudup’s answer is simple: “The same thing that makes someone a New Yorker: time and involvement. You participate in your community, in your building, at whatever capacity, over a period of time. Doesn’t matter if you were born there or no.”
