The derailment in Switzerland tragically occurred amidst a weekend of devastating avalanche activity across the broader Alpine region. Fatalities in French and Italian Alps
In Val d’Isère, south-east France, a tragic accident on Friday saw three skiers killed by an avalanche. Among the deceased were two British nationals and a French national. The group was reportedly accompanied by an instructor, who, thankfully, escaped unharmed and tested negative for alcohol and drugs. Another British individual sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Further south, on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, a further two skiers lost their lives on Sunday. The fatal avalanche occurred around 11 am in the Couloir Vesses, a popular off-piste route located in the upper Val Veny, close to the borders with France and Switzerland. The area is known for its challenging terrain and susceptibility to snow slides.
Record Fatalities and Extreme Conditions
These recent tragedies add to a grim tally of winter-related deaths in the Alps. Alpine Rescue reported that the week ending February 8th saw a record 13 off-piste skiers, climbers, and hikers perish in the Italian mountains alone, with 10 of those fatalities attributed to avalanches triggered by the highly unstable snow conditions.
Experts have warned that the combination of fresh snowfall from recent storms and wind-blown snow accumulating on weak internal layers has created particularly hazardous conditions throughout the entire Alpine crescent, stretching across France, Switzerland, and Austria. Federico Catania, a spokesperson for Italy’s Alpine Rescue Corps, explained the extreme sensitivity of the snowpack. “Under such conditions, the passage of a single skier, or natural overloading from the weight of snow, can be sufficient to trigger an avalanche,” he stated.

The European avalanche warning system categorises risk on a scale of 1 to 5, with grade 5 representing the highest and most dangerous level. A grade 5 risk is classified as “extraordinary” and is rarely issued. It signifies conditions where the possibility of “numerous very large and extremely large natural avalanches (ie not victim triggered) can be expected.” Such conditions pose a significant threat not only to individuals in the mountains but also to valley roads and settlements, necessitating stringent safety measures and evacuations.
